User research & insights
Summary

I interviewed three full-time workers in New York (ages 22–28) to learn about their interests and what sparks them to start new hobbies. From these interviews, I gathered ideas for potential features like a classroom-style platform. Two participants mentioned they might not use Peak Seek, since they already find free content on LinkedIn and Facebook — a key signal that the app would need to provide unique value beyond what’s free.

Goals
  1. What are people’s interests?
  2. How do people currently do research online?
  3. Which fields or topics are most relevant?
  4. What features do users actually want to see?
Insights
  • Users wanted to learn directly from professors and teachers, who could also benefit from extra income during school breaks.
  • The primary audience is high school and college students under 30.
  • Trust is critical: experts would need to show verified credentials to be considered credible.
Competitors
  • Intro app

The Intro app connects users to experts in fields like decorating, fashion, makeup, and wellness through paid video calls. It’s highly rated, with 800+ perfect reviews on the Apple Store.

    • Strengths: Strong reputation, broad network of lifestyle experts, seamless video experience.
    • Weaknesses: Sessions can cost up to $500 for 15 minutes, which prices out most students. The app also lacks inclusion across professional fields like healthcare, engineering, or academic support.

  • Protalk app

ProTalk offers anonymous connections with experts on flexible timing. It currently holds a 3.1 rating on Google Play based on 12 reviews.

    • Strengths: Flexible scheduling, focus on privacy, and access to expert advice on demand.
    • Weaknesses: The app design is basic and unintuitive. Frequent glitches make sign-up and navigation frustrating, creating barriers to adoption.
